Lollapalooza Event History

Lollapalooza began as a multi-city music event by Perry Farrell, the leader of Jane’s Addiction. The event’s first performers included Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T, and the Rollins Band. The first Lollapalooza started in 1991 and continued through 1998. Farrell canceled the festival in 1998 due to the loss of funds. In 2003, the festival kicked off again but still lost money, so Farrell had to cancel it again in 2004.

In 2005, Farrell set the festival for Chicago and made it a two-day event. The event was an absolute success, which led to an added day in 2006. In 2016, the festival became a four-day event.

Each August, fans get treated to the best in popular music in Chicago’s Grant Park with its more than 170 performances.
