Sporting Kansas City Soccer Club started as Kansas City Wiz in 1995. They became the 10th charter member of Major League Soccer and played under head coach Ron Newman the following year. Newman also famously coached the Los Angeles Skyhawks and Miami Americans. He also played for the Atlanta Chiefs and Dallas Tornadoes before beginning his coaching tenure.

After that first season, the club extended its name to Kansas City Wizards. Colorado Rapids vs. Kansas City Wizards was the club’s first matchup, in which the Kansas team secured their first victory — 3-0.

They won their first MLS Cup following a victory over LA Galaxy in 2000. The club won the regular season Supporters’ Shield the same year too. The club rebranded as Sporting Kansas City in 2010.

The following season saw increased success and paved the way for the club to secure its second MLS Cup in 2013. SKC got to represent Major League Soccer in the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League, where the club finished at the top of Group two.

SKC’s most notable coach is Peter Vermes, the fourth-winningest coach in MLS history. The coach made it to the National Soccer Hall of Fame and has had successful careers both as a player and as a coach.

1. Seth Sinovic played with Sporting Kansas from 2011 to 2019 before moving on to the New England Revolution in 2020. The forward made 210 appearances, scored one goal, and made 12 assists during his time with SKC.

2. Dom Dwyer is a forward who started his career with Sporting Kansas City in 2012. He is an aggressive and energetic forward with 57 goals scored in 128 games played with the Kansas City club.

3. Tim Melia is one of Sporting Kansas City’s winningest goalkeepers. He won the Allstate Defender of the Year in 2017. He reached a career-high of 13 shutouts during the regular season in 2018. He played with SKC from 2015 to 2023 and made 270 appearances.

4. Roger Espinoza is a midfielder that played with Sporting Kansas SC from 2008 to 2023. The Honduran appeared in two world cups. For Sporting Kansas City, he played in every MLS Cup playoff from 2008 to 2021. Out of 219 games played, he scored 12 goals and made 43 assists.

5. Matt Besler is a great athlete that won Defender of the Year in 2012 and received all-star honors in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. The defender played with Sporting Kansas City SC for more than a decade, from 2008 to 2020.
